Astrology is not one practice but many, each a different way of reading the same night sky.
Western. The familiar one: sun signs, birth charts, and the twelve. It uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the seasons and beginning each year at the spring equinox. A full chart goes well beyond your sun sign, mapping the moon, planets, and houses at your moment of birth.
Vedic. Known as Jyotisha, this Indian tradition uses the sidereal zodiac, which follows the actual position of the constellations. Because of that shift, your Vedic sign is often different from your Western one. It leans on the moon and works with twenty seven nakshatras, or lunar mansions, each with its own character and lore.
Chinese. A twelve year cycle of animal signs paired with five elements and the balance of yin and yang. It reads your birth year rather than your birth month.
These are only three of many living traditions, alongside Mayan, Celtic, and others. Each offers its own language for a very old human habit: looking up, and looking inward at the same time.
